A March 25, 2026, update from the contractor on the TROJENA site says the project owner, NEOM, has ended the deal to build three dams and a linked structure called “The Bow.” The notice took effect March 29, with the work described as about 30 percent complete. The contractor said the remaining backlog was about €2.8 billion, or roughly $3.2 billion, and that termination and shutdown costs will be reimbursed under the contract. The contract was announced in January 2024 as a roughly $4.7 billion effort to create a freshwater lake about 1.7 miles long in the mountains of TROJENA.

The desert winds drift over rows of giant foundation piles, each between 2.4 and 3 meters in diameter, half-buried under shifting sand. But these aren't the ruins of an ancient civilization. They are the remnants of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's dream: a futuristic city named NEOM. The project was sold as an initiative to modernize Saudi Arabia - transforming it into a global tourism hub and financial center.

The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, known as Wrth, has unveiled a new artwork at NEOM Bay Airport that highlights cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Brazil.  Titled “Harmony,” the piece is part of an initiative to feature traditional Saudi arts in public spaces and introduce visitors to the Kingdom’s cultural identity.

According to their latest announcement, the port’s infrastructure and operating capabilities are designed to support reliable cargo handling and multimodal trade routes connecting major markets across the Americas, Europe, the GCC, as well as Egypt and Iraq.

Saudi Arabia has confirmed a fundamental shift in its Vision 2030 tourism strategy, moving away from speculative mega-projects toward event-driven demand, private sector participation, and measurable economic returns.  On April 15, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) approved its 2026–2030 strategy, marking a formal transition from rapid growth and acceleration to sustained value creation. Construction commitments have been cut by tens of billions of dollars, and NEOM has been separated from the broader tourism ecosystem and repositioned as a standalone investment pillar.

On April 15, Saudi Arabia’s NEOM posted a terse but telling message on X: “Europe- Egypt- NEOM- GCC: your faster route.” Accompanied by a map, the post traced a corridor linking Europe to Egypt’s ports of Damietta and Safaga, on to NEOM Port, then overland to Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The alternative route through NEOM connects via Egyptian ports and offers a safer path for European imports to GCC countries while Iran has effectively closed the Strait. This undercuts the viability of Hormuz transits, particularly with ongoing US-Iran tensions. The Strait of Hormuz Ship Transit April market, which asks whether 10 ships will transit the strait on any day from April 8 to April 12, could decline further as traders price in the new corridor.
