With a mammoth budget of $500 billion, NEOM is a key element of Saudi’s Vision 2030 plan originally launched back in 2016 as part of the kingdom’s mission to diversify away from its oil-dependent economy. Excavation work started this month along the entire length of the project.
The development has received its fair share of skepticism around feasibility, with a raft of articles in publications ranging from The Guardian to the Financial Times including commentary from architects who conclude the project is a pipe dream. Other critics note its carbon emissions among broader concerns.

The Middle East has many architectural marvels already. Joining the list now is Saudi Arabia's massive linear city, THE LINE. Its construction is currently underway as revealed by the drone footage that surfaced on social media. This 500-metre tall mirrored linear city is now under construction. Saudi Arabia's Al Moammar Information Systems Co. has won a contract from NEOM for a total of 58.18 million riyals ($15 million).
In a regulatory filing on Tadawul on Tuesday, the company said it will provide services related to research collaborations that will be aligned with NEOM's stated aims in the field of emergent technology, cognitive computing, etc.
NEOM has partnered with hospitality developer Ennismore for its TROJENA project as the mountain tourism destination gears up to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029. Under the deal, the developer will establish its iconic brands — 25hours Hotels and Morgans Originals — in TROJENA, which is set to feature a ski village upon completion.
NEOM, the sustainable region taking shape in northwest Saudi Arabia, announced today the formal operational opening of NEOM Media Village and Bajdah Desert Studios, which together comprise the country’s largest sound stages and film production support facilities, having supported some 25 productions over the course of the last 18 months.
NEOM also formally announced its 40%+ cash rebate production incentive scheme for feature films, TV (drama, reality, documentaries) and commercials, with producers able to secure a higher percentage based on their industry development contributions.
NEOM, Saudi Arabia's smart and sustainable city, saw the submission of nine contractors for the design-and-build contract of a water transmission project that will link the desalination plant in OXAGON to the town of Gayal in Tabuk, MEED reported. The water transmission pipeline extends 100 kilometers, with a diameter of 2 meters.
