Gigantic $5bn lake being built in futuristic 'megacity' that will cost an enormous $1.5tn

In northwest Saudi Arabia, a massive man-made lake is being constructed, covering 1.5 square kilometers, as part of the TROJENA mountain resort within the ambitious NEOM megaproject. Three dams are being built to create this lake, with the main dam measuring 145 meters high and 475 meters long, and another spanning 790 meters. The primary structure will have a holding capacity of approximately 2.7 million cubic meters. The project is integral to the Saudi Vision 2030 program, aimed at diversifying Saudi Arabia's economy.

Italian industrial group Webuild has secured a £3.7 billion contract to develop the lake, which will feature an island for botanical explorations and walks. The construction is expected to involve over 10,000 personnel, including direct and third-party workers.

The project is expected to be completed by 2026, with plans to welcome 700,000 annual tourists by 2030, according to their website. Webuild CEO Pietro Salini expressed his delight at being awarded the project in NEOM, stating: "We are delighted and truly proud to be awarded this important project in NEOM. The 2.8 kilometer-long, man-made, freshwater lake will be a key asset in the TROJENA masterplan."
